Real-World Experience: Our Testimonial

At Kincer Garage, we don’t just sell these engines – we build with them. Here’s what we have to say about the Gen 4X Coyote:

“The Gen 4X is exactly what the aftermarket has been waiting for from Ford. We’ve been recommending Coyote swaps to customers for years, and this is hands down the best version for custom builders.

The single 80mm throttle body is a game-changer for fitment. If you’ve ever wrestled with dual throttle bodies and dual airboxes in a tight engine bay, you know what a relief this is. One throttle body, one intake, easier packaging — and you still get 460 horsepower.

But the real headline is the tuneable ECU. The standard Gen 4 Coyote comes with a locked PCM, which is a headache for custom builds. The Gen 4X gives you full calibration flexibility with HP Tuners support, so you can dial in the tune for your specific setup. That’s huge for anyone doing a swap into a classic Bronco or vintage Ford truck.

The power delivery is incredible. You get smooth, responsive power from idle all the way to redline — it’s well-mannered enough for daily driving but has serious punch when you get on it. Dual injection means clean intake valves and better efficiency at every RPM.

After building with the Gen 4X firsthand, we can confidently recommend it to our customers. It’s more than just a crate engine — it’s the smartest way to put modern Mustang GT power in your classic Ford.”

Why Choose the Gen 4X Coyote?

  1. Built for Swaps: The single 80mm throttle body and tuneable ECU were designed specifically for aftermarket builders — not adapted from a production car as an afterthought.
  2. Tuneable Platform: Unlike the locked Gen 4, the Gen 4X is supported by common tuning software like HP Tuners, giving you full calibration flexibility for your specific build.
  3. Proven Durability: Aircraft-grade aluminum block with plasma spray-in cylinder liners, cross-bolted main bearing caps, and thick main bearing bulkheads deliver strength where it counts.
  4. Easy Integration: Engine mount bosses and bell housing bolt pattern are common to 5.0L modular engines, making it a versatile choice for various Ford applications.

What’s Included in the Crate?

Browse Our Commonly Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Gen 4 and the Gen 4X Coyote?

The biggest difference is the throttle body setup and the ECU. The standard Gen 4 Coyote uses dual 80mm throttle bodies (like the 2024 Mustang GT) and comes with a locked PCM, which makes it difficult to use in custom applications. The Gen 4X uses a single 80mm throttle body for easier packaging and a tuneable ECU supported by HP Tuners — making it the engine Ford Performance specifically designed for aftermarket builders and engine swaps.

Will the Gen 4X work in my Early Bronco or classic Ford truck?

Absolutely! Its compact single-throttle-body design makes packaging simpler in tight engine bays, and the engine mount bosses and bell housing pattern are common to 5.0L modular engines for easy integration. When paired with a complete powertrain package from Kincer Chassis — including CNC motor mounts, transmission, wiring, and cooling — the Gen 4X drops right into a classic Bronco or vintage Ford truck.

What transmission pairs with the Gen 4X?

The engine comes with a 10R80 flexplate for automatic transmissions and is compatible with most modern Ford transmissions with the proper adapters. We offer Ford Performance control packs for manual transmission applications as well as the new control pack for use with 2018-2020 4WD 10R80 transmissions, which include all necessary electronics and wiring for installation. For manual applications, a flywheel is available separately.

Can I tune the Gen 4X Coyote?

Yes — and that’s one of its biggest advantages over the standard Gen 4. The Gen 4X is a tuneable platform supported by common tuning software such as HP Tuners. The standard Gen 4 Coyote is not tuneable, making it a less desirable engine for swaps. This means you can adjust calibration for your specific build, whether you’re running a custom exhaust, different intake setup, or planning forced induction down the road.

What's the difference between the Gen 3 and Gen 4X Coyote?

The Gen 4X features several improvements over the Gen 3: direct fuel injection in addition to port injection for better efficiency and cleaner intake valves, higher-flowing cylinder heads, an improved intake manifold design, plasma spray-in cylinder liners replacing the pressed-in liners of the Gen 3, more advanced engine management capabilities, increased durability for high-performance applications, and a new steel oil pan replacing the previous composite plastic pan. Note that the Gen 4X shares the same driver-side header flange as the 5.2L Predator engine — Gen 1, 2, and 3 exhaust manifolds will not fit.

What fuel does the Gen 4X require?

Premium fuel (93 octane) is required for maximum performance. The engine will run on 91 octane with slightly reduced power output. It is not recommended for regular 87 octane fuel.

What kind of fuel economy can I expect?

Fuel economy will vary based on application, gearing, tire size, and driving style. In a classic Bronco or truck swap with an overdrive transmission like the 10R80, many owners report 15–18 MPG on the highway and 12–15 MPG in mixed driving. The dual injection system helps with efficiency, and the 10-speed transmission keeps engine RPMs low during cruising. Learn more about Early Bronco fuel economy.

Does this engine come with a warranty?

Yes, the engine includes Ford Performance’s comprehensive warranty coverage. Contact our team for full warranty details and registration process.
